Renovating Old Furniture in County Wicklow and Wexford

There is a reason some pieces of furniture stay in a family for decades. An old dresser may have been passed down through generations, while a solid timber table might still be perfectly useful despite scratches and faded varnish. Replacing these pieces can feel wasteful, especially when the underlying structure remains in good condition.

Furniture renovation offers another option. Depending on the material and its condition, an old piece may benefit from repairs, surface preparation, refinishing or a fresh coat of paint.

For homeowners considering the renovation of old furniture in County Wicklow, Courtown or Wexford, the first step is to work out what needs attention and what should be preserved.

Which furniture is worth renovating?

Solid wooden furniture is often a good candidate for restoration because it may have a sound structure beneath a worn finish. Tables, dressers, cabinets, sideboards and chairs can sometimes be improved without replacing the entire piece.

Look at the furniture before deciding what work is required. Check whether it wobbles, whether drawers run properly and whether joints have loosened. Surface scratches and faded varnish are different problems from cracked frames or significant structural damage.

Veneered furniture needs a more careful approach. The decorative surface can be thin, so aggressive sanding may remove it or expose the material beneath. Older finishes may also require specialist handling.

The age and value of a piece matter too. If you suspect an item is antique or particularly valuable, seek an appropriate assessment before making irreversible changes.

Should you paint or restore the original finish?

It depends on the furniture and the look you want to achieve.

Painting can work well when the existing finish is damaged or when a piece needs to suit a different interior. A properly prepared cabinet, for instance, may look much fresher with a new colour.

Restoring the original finish may be preferable when the timber grain, patina or traditional details are part of the appeal. Removing the existing coating is not always necessary, and an overly aggressive approach can strip away character that cannot be recreated.

Before choosing a finish, consider the furniture's purpose. A frequently used dining table needs a finish suited to regular wear. A decorative sideboard may have different requirements.

Preparation is the part you should not rush

A good result depends on the condition of the surface before the finishing work begins. Dirt, grease, loose coatings and poorly repaired damage can all affect adhesion and appearance.

A typical renovation may involve cleaning the piece, removing failing finishes where appropriate, repairing minor defects and preparing the surface for its new coating. Any loose joints or damaged fittings should be addressed before the final finish is applied.

Sanding needs particular care. Different woods and manufactured materials respond differently, and thin veneers can be damaged easily. Using the wrong abrasive or removing too much material can create more work rather than improve the result.

Allow adequate time for coatings to dry and cure before putting furniture back into everyday use. A surface may feel dry to the touch while still needing more time to harden fully.

Furniture renovation for older Irish homes

Older homes often contain furniture that suits the proportions and character of the building. A traditional dresser or wooden cabinet can look out of place if its finish has deteriorated, but it may still be worth keeping.

Renovation can help tie these pieces into a refreshed room. A painted cabinet might suit a lighter interior, while a restored timber finish can work well in a traditional setting.

It is worth considering the room as a whole before selecting a colour. Wall paint, flooring and natural light will influence how the finished piece looks. Taking a sample or testing a finish on an inconspicuous area can help avoid an expensive mistake.

Is renovation cheaper than buying new furniture?

It can be, but the answer depends on the piece, the work required and the finish selected.

A straightforward surface refresh may be economical for a sturdy cabinet. Extensive repairs to a badly damaged item could cost more than buying a replacement. If the furniture has sentimental or historic value, preserving it may be worthwhile for reasons beyond price.

Ask for a clear breakdown of the proposed work. It should be clear whether the quote includes repairs, preparation, materials and finishing. If structural damage is discovered during the job, clarify how additional work will be agreed.

Renovation also gives you the opportunity to retain a piece that fits your home rather than trying to find a replacement with the same dimensions or design.

Frequently asked questions

Can all old furniture be restored?

No. Some pieces have extensive structural damage, while others use materials that are difficult to repair. An assessment can establish whether renovation is practical.

Is painting old wooden furniture a good idea?

It can be, provided the surface is suitable and prepared correctly. Valuable antiques may require a different approach to preserve their original finish.

Can I renovate furniture before selling my house?

Yes, if the furniture forms part of the home's presentation. However, assess whether the cost is justified and whether the piece is included in the sale.

Keep the pieces worth keeping

Furniture does not have to be new to look good in a home. If a piece is sturdy, useful or meaningful to you, renovation may be worth exploring before you replace it.
